The Wolfson Foundation is an independent charity with a focus on research and education. Our aim is to support civil society by investing in projects in science, health, heritage, humanities and the arts.
The majority of our grants are for capital infrastructure – buildings (new build and refurbishments) and equipment (see www.wolfson.org.uk/funding/funding-for-places/). We have a wide range of funding programmes and activities. Those that are relevant to this Directory include:
Museums and galleries: We provide funding for museums and galleries to improve the display and interpretation of nationally significant collections for the public. We generally award grants towards refurbishing or creating new galleries and, occasionally to education and learning spaces. Please see our website for more information on eligibility: https://www.wolfson.org.uk/funding/funding-for-places/funding-for-museums-galleries/
Historic buildings and landscapes: We support organisations managing sites of outstanding historic, architectural and cultural significance and that have a clear emphasis on public access and engagement. We award grants towards conservation and restoration work, interpretation, and education spaces. Please see our website for more information on eligibility: https://www.wolfson.org.uk/funding/funding-for-places/funding-for-historic-buildings-landscapes/
Performing arts organisations: We provide funding for performing arts organisations to improve their training and education facilities. Please see our website for more information on eligibility: https://www.wolfson.org.uk/funding/funding-for-places/funding-for-performing-arts-organisations/
Places of worship: We provide funding for places of worship of outstanding historic and architectural significance to undertake conservation and restoration work. We award grants through our historic buildings and landscapes programme listed above, and separately, the conservation and restoration of churches through a dedicated programme administered by the National Churches Trust: https://www.nationalchurchestrust.org/our-grants/wolfson-grants
We run a two-stage application process, twice a year. If your Stage 1 application is successful, we will invite you to submit a Stage 2 application.

We run a two-stage application process, twice a year, and have a rigorous assessment process. This means that it takes at least five months between submitting your Stage 1 application and hearing whether your Stage 2 application has been successful. Decisions are made in June and December. Grants are not made retrospectively, and so your project must be ongoing at the time that a funding decision is made.
