Last updated: 24/07/2025

The Martin Roth Initiative (MRI) supports artists and cultural practitioners at risk by facilitating temporary residencies in Germany or in the regions of origin. The Martin Roth-Initiative was launched by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) and the Goethe-Institut as a joint project in response to the global decline in pre-political freedom.
In the different program lines, funding can include:
- a monthly scholarship,
- individual support services (language courses, training, networking measures, etc. as required),
- financial support for additional personnel expenses of the host organisation to an appropriate extent,
- accompanying project advice from the MRI as well as networking measures and exchange of experience with other host organisations and scholarship holders.
